Al Arabiya is an Arabic-language news channel. It is based in Dubai Media City in the UAE.
The channel started broadcasting on March 3, 2003. Its original owners, who invested $300 million, were the UAE-based Middle East Broadcasting Center, the Lebanese Hariri family, and several other investors from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the Gulf countries. The purpose of Al Arabiya was to compete with Al Jazeera, which, according to its founders, was too obviously sympathetic to radical and extremist groups.
As a free-to-air channel, Al-Arabiya broadcasts political, economic, and sports news, talk shows, and reports. According to the channel's statements, it tries to use neutral terminology in its coverage of Islamists, without explicit sympathies for any of the sides.
